EPCs: High on Efficiency, Low on Demand!

29/10/2014 18:05

The Buildings Performance Institute of Europe has recently come up with a study which has proved that Energy Performance Certificate plays a huge role in creating efficient energy infrastructures but the demand for it in the market is very low all over Europe. However, at areas like Surrey in the UK, people are quite aware of the benefits these certificates render.

What does the study say?

The study has brought forth the fact that quality control is not up to the mark and as there is a shortage of access to data, which stops the citizens to make the most out of EPC ventures. These certificates are very important for measuring and attaining the advantages of energy efficiency but the targets haven't been reached due to low acceptance.

Certificates underrated:

BPIE has stated that though the 28 EU members have officially enforced the regulation of having an energy performance certificate, for homeowners as well as tenants, they have been underrated by people. Oliver Rapf, BPIE's executive director said that “The energy efficiency certificates are easiest and the best way to keep informed about the energy utility of every infrastructure. But inspite of that, several member states have not been able to implement the systems that are extremely reliable. .

Lack of certifiers?

There are a few companies in Surrey and other areas of UK that are certified. However, mandatory training for certifiers is enforced only upon half of EU member states. 12 states out of the list have the choice to penalize non-complaince. As certain states do not have to conduct the energy inspection of buildings, it leads to the reduction of data accuracy.

Pertaining to this data, BPIE has stated that it is very important to make the role of EPCs stronger so that the energy efficiency targets can be achieved by the year 2030 as targeted.
